Players Questions
Name: Thomas Singleton-Wells
GB Number: #12

Singleton-Wells talking to QB Coach Ryan Baker
DC: First off, congratulations on being named to the travelling squad for the Great Britain Students Men’s Program vs Sweden Students. How has the whole process of being involved in the student program been, from applying to trial to now?

The process has been a valuable experience to go through as a player and is a great program to be a part of. The whole process starting with application to try-out, various training camps, and finally selection for the travelling squad has shown how serious Great Britain and the governing bodies are when it comes to the improvement of American Football in the country.

The whole process has been outstanding in regards to professionalism and development of the athletes. The way in which the program is conducted shows the huge potential for the success of American football in Britain, and how the sport continues to improve in this country with the program leading the forefront.

DC: With the relatively short period of time between trials and going to Sweden, with limited training which has been affected by the weather, how have preparations gone going into Saturday’s game?

The preparations leading up to the game have gone extremely well, shown by the outcomes of the training camp with the team displaying some high levels of play and great tempo. The time, organisation and structure that have gone into the camp schedules have ensured that the time spent together as a team has been utilised fully.

DC: Has it been difficult juggling different playbooks being in BUAFL season, and how has the install gone on the Great Britain Program?

Taking on board a new playbook always takes time and dedication to ensure you are a familiar as you can be with your playbook. However, learning the new Great Britain Program playbook hasn’t been a challenge but a large amount of time has been dedicated to the understanding and learning of the playbook to the best of my ability. It’s not every day you get to represent Great Britain so you do whatever it takes to play at this level.

DC: How has the Great Britain Program measured up to you own university program?

The Great Britain Program has filled in voids seen within University programs with the large group of quality coaching staff and well thought out structure to training sessions. The program has moved on from that of the University programs as it broadens your current football knowledge allowing you to experience new drills and learn new techniques which you may not have experienced before.

DC: There are lots of high quality athletes on the squad has anyone really stood out in your opinion?

There are a vast amount of high quality athletes on the squad with too many to name. Obviously the players from Birmingham, Loughborough and Hertfordshire are all of a high calibre due to the great coaching and high level teams they play for. However, there are players who stand out from smaller teams such as DMU which shows that there is talent across all university teams and that the sport at a university level does breed great athletes.

DC: As, well as quality athletes Coach Hill has put together a top notch staff. Do you feel the coaching has helped you progress as a player?

The coaching staff have been superb in the way the coach and the amount of knowledge they bring with them. I personally have learned a great deal from the coaches in regards to the sport but also how to conduct myself as an athlete and an individual. The coaches are great mentors for some of us younger guys and they really do bring hit every aspect of being a coach to the players.

DC: What are your expectations of the game this weekend vs Sweden?

This game will be a fun, exciting and interesting game to watch and also to have the fortune of playing in. Sweden will put out a great team and will bring a high level of play with them. However, the team has been working hard and the game plan the coaches are bringing and have set out utilises all aspects of the team’s talents. We just have to go out there, give it our all and execute the way we have done in training camp and it should be a good day.

DC: Finally, with the World Student Championships being played in Sweden in 2014, what are you thoughts and what would you say to any university player wanting to be on that squad next year?

The fact that American football is now part of the World Student Championships is incredible. It just shows that the sport is making a step forward and progressing all the time. If a team from Great Britain is entered into the championships next year It will  be a great promoter for the sport helping to show that GB can display high levels of performance and be a great competitor on the world stage. I would say for any University player who
