GFL Predictions - Week Two

Franken Knights @ Munich Cowboys

Dantestadion, the shared home for the Munich Cowboys and the Munich Rangers, will host an incredibly unpredictable game this weekend. The Knights shocked the European football community last week when they beat the Swaebisch Hall Unicorns in a huge upset. Franken chose to keep their import quarterback, Cedric Townsend, from the previous season and he looked to be in good form and proved to be an impressive dual threat against the GFL’s toughest defense.

The Rangers have been blighted with rumors of disgruntled players apparently jumping ship to newly promoted teams such as GFL2’s Starnberg Argonauts and GFL3 bullies Ingolstadt Dukes. Management problems and altercations between players and import coaches has thinned their roster slightly.

Rhein-Neckar Bandits @ Schwaebisch Hall Unicorns

Rhein just managed to come away with the win last week after an impressive comeback against the Weisbaden Phantoms, but it was a battle between two of the bottom teams. Schwaebisch managed to lose to an impressive Franken Knights side and new quarterback Ryan Taggart had a very unimpressive game with 3 interceptions and poor decision making. Schwaebisch’s offensive line gave Taggart more than enough time to get the ball out and interceptions and fumbles cost them the game. This one will be very tough to predict, it looks as if Schwaebisch have stepped down in skill, but let’s not forget that last season Schwaebisch lost their first game and went on to go undefeated the rest of the season.

Stuttgart Scorpions @ Weisbaden Phantoms

Last week Weisbaden managed to stage a 16 point comeback falling just 1 point short of success versus the Rhein-Neckar Bandits. The Phantoms German players showed to be particularly impressive vs Rhein and after playing one game already it may show that the Phantoms are going to be the stronger team. Stuttgart have always been good at running the ball, they’ve had good running backs the last few years and we expect them to stick to that. Last year Stuttgart came away with a 34-21 win. After not seeing them over the off season it’s going to be tough but I expect Stuttgart to come away with the win again.

Kiel Baltic Hurricanes @ Berlin Adler

Probably the most interesting game of the week and could make the rest of the seasons predictions a lot easier depending on how Berlin play. The Adler surprisingly lost last week in their rivalry versus the Berlin Rebels and have some explaining to do. Adler Head Coach Wanja Mueller will be looking for a big burst of energy to revitalise their season having taken such a big blow early on.

Kiel, one of the richest teams in Europe, will be taking for the field for the first time this season and for the first time in a long time without experienced QB Jeff Walsh. Kiel have been settled in with Walsh for some time now but he needed a change and Dresden offered him and talented Kiel running back Trevar Deed a new deal and another shot at the German title.

A new look Kiel will be looking to see if their shake up can take them that extra bit further into the finals and come away with the title. Kiel head coach Patrick Esume is arguably one of the best European coaches to date. He definitely plays a big part in Kiel’s success over the previous years.

Dusseldorf Panthers @ Cologne Falcons

Dusseldorf are a big and athletic team. They’ve proved over the last two seasons that they can play GFL1 football and we don’t see them going anywhere soon, in fact they look like a team who could grow to be German champions in the foreseeable future.

The Cologne Falcons, proud owners of an NFL quality practice facility after they brought it from the Cologne NFL Europe team. Cologne have got something to prove this season, they’re in the same position the Panthers were 2 season ago, freshly promoted from GFL2 North. A hard team to predict due to promotion often dragging players from all round to them. Dusseldorf are going to be a tough opponent, but a good team for Cologne to start their GFL1 career in.
